A Brighton man has been jailed for more than nine years for stabbing a partygoer early on New Year's Day.

Alex Besmir has been convicted for nine and a half years for two counts of GBH with intent and drug possession.

In the early hours of January 1 this year, two men were walking from a party in Bedford Place with one of their friends. They were arguing while they walked home along Temple Street around 3.30am and a man, later established as Alex Besmir, shouted at them to be quiet from a top floor window. He threatened them before emerging onto the street.

Besmir confronted the two men and attacked them. One of the men, an 18-year-old, was stabbed in the chest, and the other, an 18-year-old, suffered injuries to his hand and arm.

Alex Besmir, 34, a maintenance employee, of Temple Street, Brighton was arrested and charged with two counts of GBH with intent and possession of a class A drug. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine years six months at Lewes Crown Court on March 12. He will deported back to Albania when he is released.

Detective Constable Aaron Halsey said: "This was a violent attack on two men. It was New Year's Eve in a very busy part of the city and his reaction was totally out of proportion to the incident.

"The length of the sentence shows the severity of the offence and he will be deported after he has served his sentence and will no longer be a resident in our city."
